D's note: The addiction to alcohol is a significant physical and psychological condition to control. You need to make the decision to quit and then to quit forever! Then you must commit to changing your life-style so that alcohol is no longer a part of it. Start by making a plan, put it into effect and then stick with it! There are many programs available to help you break your addition.
The most commonly used programs for committed users are Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and a relatively new program (and my favorite) called "SMART Recovery®". AA is based on a "12 Step" program that relies on your spirituality throughout the steps to achieving lasting sobriety. SMART uses "Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)" wherein an individual uses their mental faculties to identify and control their thoughts and actions, which can be applied to their fight against their addiction and many other aspects of life. It doesn't matter if you use a program, or which one you choose to use, to kick your addiction--it matters that you get sober and stay that way. The consequence for a person with cirrhosis who continues to abuse alcohol is death. If you have tried to quit in the past, but relapsed, you definitely need to seek assistance to quit. Seek medical help if you have had bad experiences with withdrawal in the past—sudden removal of the substance of abuse that your body has become dependent can be life-threatening! There are medications that can be administered in a controlled environment (ie. hospital or addiction resource center) to get you thru the physical withdrawal. Seek personal or group psychological help to get your head straight. You can talk to your primary doctor to find a mental health professional, who will help you work thru your addiction. Another option is to use an "Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse" (AODA) counselor who will help you understand your addiction and how to manage cravings, social situations that normally involve alcohol and many other aspects of "being straight". AODA counselors can be found thru the "Yellow Pages" or online by "Googling" something like "AODA counselor [your local community]". |
